At VFW Post 697 last night in Whitman, state Representative Geoff Diehl formally declared his candidacy for the US Senate seat to be determined in 15 months. A Republican from Whitman who has served in the legislature since 2011, Rep. Diehl’s overall argument was that Senator Elizabeth Warren, whose term expires next year, has not done enough in Congress for the people of Massachusetts.
The function hall contained a festive crowd estimated at several hundred people, as hundreds of red, white, royal blue, light blue and clear balloons plus several massive Diehl for Senate banners festooned the room. Before he spoke, Rep. Diehl was introduced by Boston sports media host John Dennis and Rep. Diehl’s older daughter.
Rep. Diehl was one of the main coordinators for presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign last year in the Bay State. In addition to critiquing Senator Warren for focusing too much on selling her book in hopes of running for president in three years, he drew some of his loudest applause of the night in saying he would strengthen the nation’s borders against illegal immigration.
